I'm considering stopping smoking weed after heavy smoking (all day every day) for about a year and a half. Is there any tar buildup in my lungs? And is there any permanent damage to my lungs?

its possible that there is some damage that may not be detected later in life. Unlike the kidneys which heal themselves in a way if you just automatically stop drinking. I think its a good decision to stop smoking. May God see you through this journey as you put away the smoking addiction.

I've been smoking a pack and a half fo12 years, and my lungs feel trashed. I quit for 1 1/2 years and felt much better but after starting again my breathing scares me worse then before, anyone do any sort of lung exercises or anything to enhance lung function after tobacco abuse?

I imagine that any kind of exercise can enhance lung function. Just don't take beta carotene, it actually increases your chances for lung cancer especially if you are/were a smoker.

Timeline of benefits

What many people don't know is that if you quit smoking you can actually reverse some of the damage that you have done to your body.

After:

20 minutes — your heart rate and blood pressure begins to drop.

12 hours — the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.

Two-3 weeks — circulation improves and lung function increases.

One-9 months — coughing and shortness of breath decrease and your cilia (tiny hair-like structures that remove mucus from your lungs) regain normal function.

One year — excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker.

Five years — stroke risk is reduced to that of a non-smoker (can take up to 15 years).

10 years — Lung cancer death rate is half that of a smoker and risk of other cancers (mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, cervix and pancreas) decreases.

15 years — risk of coronary heart disease is that of a non-smoker.

So here you go, eat broccoli!
Broccoli May Protect Lungs From Cancer
12/08/2008
A recent study from the University of Minnesota, published in Cancer Prevention Research, found a broccoli compound may help protect against lung cancer in smokers.

While it's safe to say that smoking should be avoided all together, the results suggest smokers could benefit from upping their intake of cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower that contain the compound indole-3-carbinol (I3C).

The researchers reported that mice exposed to carcinogens found in tobacco smoke and fed varying doses of I3C had significant reductions in the number of lung tumors.

I admit, I slipped up a few times. I was smoking about 7 cigarettes a day (on average lol, sometimes more, sometimes less) when I quit cold turkey….

How do manage not smoking, while pregnant AND after baby gets here??
I've only smoked about 4 times in 33 weeks (besides the first 4).
No…. I quit when I found out at 4 weeks.

I've only smoked 4 times (one cigarette each time) since I quit. So its been 29 weeks, with 4 cigarettes.
Nope, no help/support group. Just me! My mom didn't even know I was smoking.

Sounds like you've done very well. It's SOOOO hard to be a smoker and quit - EVEN WHEN you find out you're pregnant. I'm glad for those who "CLAIM" that they just QUIT COLD TURKEY. good for them! HOWEVER, back here in humanville, it's not always so easy, and understandably so. The girl that said "we're brainwashed to think it's hard to quit" is naive. You've done very well and should be proud of yourself for being able to control it so well, and to be able to be so honest. Good For You and Congrats on the baby!

Also this addiction can be cured, but i am sure you are right. There must be something mystical with this thing of nicotine.

May you read some usefull articles, here is one:

Addiction means making a bad habit of something. Any kind of addiction is bad. Making our body habitual to something good or bad can take a form of an addiction. When a person converts his liking to a habit and habit to a necessity, it takes the shape of an addiction. Addictions are of many kinds such as an addiction of alcohol, coffee, tea, drugs, gambling, etc. The one who is addicted is a patient and should be handled with patience. The family of the patient has to suffer equally as the patient. Addiction is a turning point in the life of a person and a person starts thinking in a different way once gets addicted to something. The support and love of family and friends is very important for the patient so that he comes out of it.

I have smoked cigarettes on and off for about a year, but I know for a fact that i never get any kind of craving for them at all. I've smoked quite a few packs but can easily stop for weeks if I wanted to. Is there any evidence that some people can be immune to nicotine addiction?
well i almost always only smoke if i drink or get high or something, but if I'm sober, they actually make me gag if I smoke more than one. Weird i guess…

Never heard of it - I wish I was like you

I've been smoking for almost 8 years. I'm in the process of quitting right now. Hopefully by the end of January. How long will it take for my lungs to recover after 8 years of smoking?

At a guess about 3 years but there are a lot of factors involved including how much you smoked and your general health status.

Go to your doctor and ask him to carry out a spirometry test, this easy test measures your current lung function then give it a month or so after quitting and have the test repeated, this will give a good indicator of your repiratory recovery rate.

Good luck and hope your 2009 is smoke free and healthy!

Researchers have an abundance of ideas on ADHD, but no real answer. My brother had ADHD and my mom never drank, smoke or did drugs. My son has ADHD and I smoked, but never drank or did drugs. I don’t think those things are contributing factors. I personally believe it happens, like a birth defect.

However, I do not advise that you continue smoking pot while you are pregnant. You want your baby to get the best start possible in life, and early exposure to drugs is not good. Just stop while you are pregnant.

Why do you stop drinking alcohol? I have heard and known many women who will quit drinking alcohol but not quit smoking while pregnant. Can someone please explain this to me?

"Smoking cigarettes (or marijuana) while you're pregnant can harm your fetus.

We have a doctor to explains the risks of smoking while you pregnant in this detailed video:
